Dr. Terence Hicks has served as an academic Dean for the Clemmer College of Education at East Tennessee State University and the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education at Prairie View A&M University, Texas, a member of the Texas A&M University System. Most recently, he has served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia and as a Research Fellow for the National Institutes of Health, National Center of Minority Health and Health Disparities. Currently, Dr. Hicks is serving as a tenured full professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Dr. Hicks is a 2024 Legacy Award recipient, an accomplished award-winning author, an award-winning university academic Dean, and an award-winning Social Scientist. As a Social Scientist, he is a cited authority in the area of the first-generation college student population and has presented academic papers both nationally/internationally. He has been cited across all 7 continents, and received high visibility in countries such as South Africa, China, Germany, Mexico, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and the United States. To date, he has published eleven (11) books in the field of higher education/college student population and over 100 combined research publications and/or presentations. Most recently, his book titled “An Educational Journey to Deanship: A Memoir” won the 2021 Living Now Book Award in the memoir category. Additionally, he has been interviewed and cited in Diverse Issues in Higher Education, USA Today, Research Alert National Yearbook, Detroit News, ABC-KTKA Channel 49 in Topeka, Kansas, KPVU-FM 91.3 (Texas) Public Affairs talk show, WFSS 91.9 FM (North Carolina), Fayetteville Observer, Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, Johnson City Press and many university websites, peer-reviewed journals and books.
Dr. Hicks holds a bachelor's and master's degree from Virginia State University, a doctorate in Education degree from Wilmington University, Delaware and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. Also, he is the President of Hicks Research Consulting, LLC, a comprehensive consulting company that provide research evaluation/assessment for universities, school districts, community colleges and community agencies.
