As-Built Schedule Development based on Daily Work Report Data

Abstract

The Daily Work Report (DWR) data collected in construction sites include data attributes for the quantities of work completed, corresponding dates, and the resources utilized for those work activities. Currently, state DOTs monitor the overall progress of projects to the date in terms of the percentage of dollar amount spent. The data attributes collected in DWR data can be used to develop detailed as-built schedules and monitor item-level progress. This study investigates the current level of DWR data being collected and provides a methodology for developing as-built schedules from the data. In this study, the data from MS Access-based DWR database are first extracted and transformed using Structured Query Language (SQL) and then exported to an excel spreadsheet. It is then imported into MS Visio to develop a visual as-built schedule. This study uses data from one project for a case study demonstration. The as-built schedule thus developed can be used to identify delays and quantify its impact to the overall project schedule in real time. Such delay impact analysis will also aid in resolving delay related claims and disputes. Further, historical as-built schedules can be used to develop a scheduling system for generating automated schedules based on historical activity sequences and durations. Such system can save time and effort required to develop schedules for future projects.
