Abstract

We still know relatively little about how qualitative researchers are using qualitative data analysis software (QDAS) packages. Lingering skepticism and perpetual misconceptions about QDAS could be attributed to this gap. we share findings from our analysis of 763 journal articles that reported using ATLAS.ti or NVIVO in their studies. Our analysis characterized both who is using these tools and how they are reporting this use. Health sciences researchers using interview and focus group data were the heaviest users. Few provided any details on QDAS use beyond mentioning that it was used. While QDAS can support phases of the research beyond data analysis, few reported such uses. Those that did can serve as models for other researchers reporting their use of QDAS. We share the best practices that may increase transparency and greater understanding of how QDAS can support qualitative work.
