Abstract
Spontaneous otoacoustic emission (SOAE) changes following the onset of a broadband contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) presented at 65 dB SPL were measured in human subjects to evaluate the time-course of medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent effects. Data were sampled for 1.23 s with the onset of the recording window at 409 ms prior to an abrupt onset of CAS. For each ear, a set of 50 waveform samples was analyzed off-line. The results indicated that: (1) CAS alters SOAEs with a latency in the range of tens of milliseconds relative to the CAS onset, and (2) SOAE frequency increases with a shorter latency than the latency of SOAE amplitude decrease. It is postulated that contralateral suppression of SOAEs is mediated primarily by MOC activity rather than through the stapedial reflex.
