Abstract
Intestinal gas is a commonly experienced condition and may be associated with considerable discomfort and lifestyle impairment. The most frequent clinical manifestations are eructation (belching of swallowed air), bloating (uncomfortable fullness or abdominal distention, particularly after eating), and flatulence (excessive passage of air from the stomach or intestines through the anus). When recommending appropriate nonprescription treatment, it is important to differentiate between acute, temporary symptoms versus those that may indicate a chronic gastrointestinal (GI) disorder such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), lactose intolerance, or celiac disease.
