Pharmacological evidence for GluN2A receptor mediation of click train induced 40 Hz neural synchrony in rodent temporal and prefrontal cortices

Abstract

The Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR) is a reliable biomarker for examining cortical neural oscillations elicited by rhythmic sensory input.40 Hz click trains evoke robust gamma-band synchronization across species, a process dependent on NMDA receptor-mediated mechanisms. Individuals with neuropsychiatric disorders consistently show deficits in 40 Hz synchrony, and recent genetic studies link GluN2A subunit variants of the NMDA receptor to increased schizophrenia risk. This study investigates whether selective GluN2A antagonism disrupts 40 Hz neural synchrony in conscious rats implanted with chronic epidural electrodes.
