Abstract

Remarried stepfamilies make up a sizable portion of American families. Family clinicians and researchers
suggest that the ability of stepparents to develop close bonds with stepchildren may be critical to the wellbeing of couple relationships as well. Using Actor-Partner Interdependence Models to analyze data from 319 remarried stepfamily couples, we evaluated how remarried parents’ and stepparents’ perceptions of a stepparents’ affinity-seeking and maintaining behaviors were associated with their own and their spouse’s marital satisfaction and their perceptions of stepparent-stepchild relationship quality. Preliminary results show significant positive actor effects across all outcomes and one significant partner effect. Implications will be discussed.
