Abstract

Twenty-two male, elite ,junior olympic weightlifters, served as subjects to investigate the effects of short-term overwork on lifting mechanics. Subjects with a mean +SD age of 17.3 +1.4 yra., body mass of 67_4 -t:1.2_] kg. and height of 168_4 ±8_1 cm were videotaped performing successive snatches with incremented increases in resistance. Tests were performed pre-post a week of high volume training. A 2-dimensional spatial model was used to analyze bar trajectories durjng the last successful trial (J..ST) and the trial representing 80 - 85% of the pre-training LST resistance_ Height? time to peak velocity. and horizontal deviation of the bar were quantified overall. Lifting movement was divided into first and second pulls to identify peak velocities and when they occurred_ "ANOVA with repeated measures indicated significant differences in both positive (p:=_01) and negative (p=_ 03) horizontal deviation pre-post_ No significant differences (p>-05) were found in peak velocities pre-post. However the time to reach peak velocity was significantly greater pre-post (p=_02) during the first, and second pulls at both absolute and relative £.RT resistance. These responses may be detrimental to optimum performance and indicative of overwork.
